Dada

The art movement Dada is of particular interest to me in relation to modernism due to its origin in the First World War as a response from left-wing anti-war artists to the conflict. As well as Dada being anti-war, the movement was influenced to be anti-bourgeois art incorporating many found materials. Dada’s intention to shock, confuse or outrage the upper class (who assume their opinion on art is better than everyone else’s) is something I love. Dada uses language to convey meaning through practices such as concrete poetry, visual poetry, simultaneous poetry, and visual art which includes the use of words. I have found using these techniques formed from Dada useful within my practice to generate ideas and play with language patterns and speech. I remember making something in primary school which I now know is concrete poetry as i made a poem about a ballerina in the shape of a ballerina!!!
