Article 19 of The Declaration of Human Rights states:
“Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers.”
Governments such as the Eritrean one violate this in many ways. Eritrea is one of the world’s most censored countries with only 2 official radio stations, both of which are products of the Ministry of Information – a government scheme, meaning media is controlled and is likely filled with propaganda. There is not a single Independent media outlet in Eritrea and since 2001 independent broadcasts have been banned including all international media. Journalists are often detained “longer than any country in the world”(2)
Organisation Reporters Without Borders, whose ethos is to protect the right of freedom to information globally broadcast to Eritrean citizens on Radio Erena. An “independent apolitical radio station run by exiled journalists from Paris”(2)
In this case, pirate radio from Eritrea is used as a weapon against human rights as the Radio Erena transmission are disrupted.
