I found the exhibiting process very insightful for this project. I was working with limited space, time, and resources; considering this, I felt that it was very successful. A limitation within the installation process was plinths; the gallery told me plinths would be provided, but they would be mismatched. I would have preferred matching plinths, but as I did not have the money or time, it was the only option. By arranging them in the way presented in the photos, I don’t think the plinths are deduced from the work. Another minor problem with exhibiting was the inevitable sound bleed, as there were two overworks in the gallery, which were both amplified, my work appeared much quieter than when I had tested it at home. The only way to resolve this was to ask the other artists to reduce the volume of their work. I also invited them to listen to my work whilst it was playing so they could understand why I felt it was needed for theirs to be turned down. By exhibiting I also found some flaws in the sonic element of the work, retrospectively, I think it would have been better to create a more voice based sound work as this is what the telephone speakers are designed for, with this knowledge I am adapting my prototype to create the best listening experience possible.
By exhibiting the work at this early stage in my portfolio, it has allowed me to gage audiences understanding and enjoyment of the work. When taking with audience members and other exhibiting artists, people were most drawn to the ‘Missiles Made Fresh Daily’ phone. They said they found the sounds and themes of the work engaging and reported the work felt quite different from most art they had experienced in Bradford. Based on this feedback I have decided to develop the work further for portfolio project one and adjust the work to be more suited to the themes at play within it.
