I first came across this wonderful episode of radio in the guest lecture series in January and have frequently listened to since, always surprised by new complexities within the episode. Based around Solange’s 2019 album “When I Get Home” Felix Taylor creates an homage to the album through a mix of tracks from the album, samples used in the album, samples from the album, interviews and more for his radio series ‘Cartography’. As well as the episode broadcasted by Bristol-based station ‘1020 radio’ Taylor created an intricate spider web of Solange’s influences both cultural and musical, themes, samples, and collaborations. I find having a radio episode dedicated to a singular album a very interesting idea, I had thought about doing this myself with D’Angelo’s ‘Voodoo’ album but was unsure how to execute this. Taylor’s approach is majorly inspiring to me, the curation of sonic elements stays interesting throughout the episode with a balance of music, dialogue, and sound design expertly layered together with audio effects. The contrasting loud and quiet completely emersed me within the episode it felt as though I had stepped into Solange’s world. Knowing Taylor’s relationship with hip-hop and how he felt inspired by at the time of creation gives context to the way in which this episode is compiled using loops and samples. Within his lecture he mentioned that he desires his work to “put more information into music”, this episode is exactly what I would expect as a sort of sonic documentary of the album and artist.
